We see it time and time again here at MSC, people who build relationships with their gym peers and/or come in with family and friends are more consistent and more successful. It’s not only WAY more fun, but science actually backs it up!:
- Accountability = Less “Netflix and Naps”
Studies show that people with workout buddies are more likely to stick to their routines. Why? Because if you bail, your friend might send you a meme that says, “I thought we were in this together, you weakling.” The shame is real. - Endorphin Boost = Instant Happiness
Exercising releases endorphins, and laughing with friends boosts those even more. So, when you’re both gasping for air after a brutal set, you’re getting a double dose of happiness. It’s like your body’s way of saying, “You may be slightly suffering, but at least you’re in good company.” - Social Bonding = More Motivation
Oxytocin, the “bonding hormone,” is released when you exercise with friends. So not only do you get fit, but you’re also creating deeper friendships. The more you sweat together, the tighter the bond. - Competition = You Push Harder
Friendly competition triggers dopamine (the “reward” chemical). When your buddy hits a new PR, your brain’s like, “I must beat them!” and also like “OMG, I am so freaking proud of them”…and also “I want to do that!”. That sweet rush of victory is motivation enough to push through when all you want to do is skip that last set. - FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) = You’ll Never Skip Again
When you work out with friends, you’re not just skipping a gym session; you’re missing out on social time, laughs, and possibly shared post-workout pizza. This fear of missing out is scientifically proven to get you to the gym more often than any motivational quote on a poster.
In short, science says: working out with friends taps into all kinds of brain-boosting chemicals (and peer pressure) that make you both more likely to stick with it. Plus, you get to laugh at each other’s awkward attempts at new program week— and that’s priceless.
So go grab a buddy, and get ready to CRUSH 2025 in the gym!
