Last week, I shared a little story about how I developed my go-to mantra for when I need a kick in the pants… Starting Over Sucks.
Remember those brutal first workouts? The soreness, the struggle, and then—finally—things started clicking. If you take a break now, you’ll be right back at square one. Routine is great for your brain—it reduces decision fatigue and helps make good habits stick. When it comes to fitness, consistency always wins… because, let’s be real, starting over SUCKS.
Things are going to get hard, and your gym routine won’t always feel shiny and new. Here are four ways to keep your head in the game:
Celebrate the tiny wins. Did you make it through the workout without dying? WIN. Lifting heavier? HUGE WIN. Progress is progress!
Remember why you started. Whether it’s for the muscles, setting a good example for your kids, or just avoiding becoming one with the couch—keep that reason front and center. Stick a post-it where you’ll see it daily.
Find an accountability buddy. Fitness is more fun with friends—it’s just a fact. Plus, you’re way more likely to show up when someone’s expecting you (…bonus points if they give you sh*t for bailing).
Remember, this too shall pass. If you’re following a solid program, things will change, results will come, and motivation will return. Your drive may ebb and flow, but sticking with it, finding a place you love, and staying the course will get you where you want to be. And honestly, there’s nothing more motivating than crushing your goals.
Consistency > Starting Over. You got this.
