Resolutions

My least favorite season is coming – resolution season 🙄. I know, I know, a gym owner should LOVE resolution season…but hear me out!

I think there is value in reflecting on what you want to accomplish, challenging yourself and setting goals BUT, most people do one of the following things when setting resolutions:

1- Set an a goal with an unrealistic timeline

2- Set a goal with no support, information or plan

3- Quit when they don’t get results in the first 4 weeks Or quit because they are fried and following a plan that is sustainable

It isn’t sexy, but slow progress and slowly building habits is where it’s at!

Here are 5 things to keep in mind when you are trying to build habits to support your goals in 2024:

1) What is the goal – define it! Is it S.M.A.R.T. – Specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time bound? If not — refine it until it is! An example of a goal that is NOT smart and hard to plan for is…”I want to lose weight in 2024″, without knowing how much weight, by when, how your body reacts and how long it is safe to lose the amount you are considering, and by when you want to achieve it you can’t understand what habits you need to make or or break to achieve it/

2) What is currently preventing you from achieving your S.M.A.R.T. Goal? Do you not know where to start? Do you need accountability? Does your schedule need to change? Are you not willing to do what needs to be done to reach that specific goal?

3) What is ONE thing you can you do to overcome the barrier you have identified? If you are not motivated on your own to get up early to run, but that is the only time that works and you want to run a half marathon what is ONE thing you can do? Will hiring a coach you are accountable to help? Will meeting a friend or maybe even just touching base with a friend? Or can you take a look at your schedule and maybe make some changes …

4) Make overcoming that ONE thing your focus until you can stay consistent for 3-6 months. Focus on that one thing every day, and it can be small.

Baby steps and consistency – that is the way to achieve your goals in 2024. Not a 4 week challenge with 7 days a week exercise, not an extreme and intense 6 week reset, not writing a goal on a board and staring at it daily with out any thought behind why you haven’t been able to achieve it in the past. Make a plan, change some things slowly, and keep at it.
