I friggin’ hate the internet …
I need to vent. The internet fitness bros with the “never miss a Monday, go hard all summer, quit drinking, eat only meat, never touch ice cream” content is driving me insane. So let’s talk about it.
Fitness is about what’s sustainable. Life is meant to be enjoyed. If this summer you want to chill a bit and dial it back, you SHOULD. You don’t need to go hard to hold onto the results you’ve built. You’re an adult, in charge of your own body and your own life. If a soft serve makes you happy, have the damn soft serve(…I recommend with rainbow sprinkles in a cake cone
).
Now, here’s the adult part. If you want more muscle, want to lose weight, want to progress your squat, want to run farther… dialing back won’t get you there. Period. Hard stop. And stopping altogether will make you regress. That’s just how it works. And guess what? That’s fine too if it’s what you choose and you know what comes with it.
At the end of the day, what you eat and what you do with your body is yours to decide. But don’t be surprised if you come back after 6-8 weeks of throwing your routine out the window feeling weaker, slower, or like your clothes fit differently. If you know that’s the trade-off and you’re at peace with it, that’s absolutely fine.
If your goal is just to maintain and loosen up a little, 2-3 quick strength (or endurance, whatever your thing is) sessions a week will do it. Keeps you in the habit. Keeps the fall from feeling like starting over from scratch.
I’m not telling you what you should do. No coach should. But long-term health doesn’t get to take a 6-month sabbatical so if you want to stay in it for the long haul, some level of consistency has to be there. But fitness can be a summer bitch sometimes (and you know bitches love a summa… Real Housewives of Rhode Island, anyone?), so let her go on vacation, sip some rosé, and recharge if that’s what she needs

.
.
That’s exactly why at MSC we intentionally mix up our summer programming. We dial things back for some people (all our programming is completely customized to each member), we keep it fun, and play with new stuff to work around your vacations. We’ll have quick workouts ready if you want to stay consistent while you’re away, and a big high-five waiting if you choose rest, recovery, and whatever makes you happy on your time off instead.
Do what’s sustainable. Enjoy your life. See you in the gym for whenever that looks like for you this summer
Love,
T
